About Us

  • We Code held its first hackathon in 2015 to create a safe environment for women and friends to share and learn technology together. Now in its fourth year, We Code hosts annual hackathons for participants of all levels and expertise to grow as engineers and shape the field of technology in Portland, Oregon.

Meet the Organizers

  • Amber Milavec

    Creator and Chief Organizer

In February 2015, Amber organized and ran her first hackathon, Hack Like a Girl, with the desire to create a unique space for women and friends to share and learn technology together. Later that year, she partnered with Puppet to create what is now known as the We Code Hackathon for women and friends.

When not organizing hackathons, Amber works as a Principal Technical Architect in Nike Digital Engineering.

  • Lauren English

    Senior Operations Manager

At Puppet, Lauren is a part of Operational Awesomeness for the Product Engineering Organization, in addition to being a three year WeCode Hackathon Alumni. Her spirit sister is Marie Kondo, an organizing consultant and star of the recent Netflix series Tidying up with Marie Kondo. Lauren loves animals, mountains, coding, humans, textiles, and food. Her forbidden love: all of the cheese.

  • Tiffany Longworth

    Non-Profit Wrangler

Tiffany is the non-profit wrangler for WeCode and a Site Reliability Engineer at Zapproved. She has launched successful projects large and small, but has also worked on ones that were spectacular failures! In her work, Tiffany employs her background as a Marine, her training as an English teacher, the principles of automation, and cat gifs as much as possible.

  • Eric Putnam

    Volunteer Coordinator

Eric has been a software engineer at Puppet for over two years and is a WeCode Hackathon Alumni. He is excited to be part of an event that aims to support the voices and skills of women and other marginalized groups in technology.

  • Hillary Carpenter

    Event Coordinator

Hillary has worked in the meetings and events industry for 20 years, but is new to the coding side of things. She enjoys traveling and has lived abroad twice in Chile. Her husband and two grade school boys keep her active in northeast Portland. On the weekends you can find them running, cooking, and watching their favorite football teams: the Seahawks and WSU Cougars!

Meet the Judges

  • Michelle Schuknecht

    Engineering Manager at Puppet

Michelle manages the Quality Engineering team at Puppet. She has 16 years of experience in the tech industry with a wide range of roles including project management, operations, systems administration and software development.

  • Jessica Mullins

    Software Engineer at Nike

At Nike, Jessica works on the Personalization Engineering team where she get to bring Machine Learning models to life. When she's not at her desk you can usually find Jessica hanging out with her husband, chasing her 2-year-old son, in the kitchen baking, or working out.
